Zaphod’s – Zaphod Beeblebrox

Named after a character from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy this bar is self-described as “the bar at the edge of the universe”.  A great local venue to check out live bands and dance the night away to your favourite songs that you don’t hear everyday on the radio.

With two young children I admit its been a while since I’ve been to Zaphod’s in the Byward Market.  However it was always a great venue to check out great bands and they feature a wide variety of music to suit most tastes.  I used to go to Electric Ballroom a DJ’d event on Friday nights.  According to the website schedule it starts at 11:00 p.m. after the live bands.

Zaphod’s location was even featured in Rolling Stone’s video shoot back in 2005 for the song Streets of Love!  Zaphod’s website has a list of notable acts that have headlined over the years listed at http://www.zaphodbeeblebrox.com/history.html

I always found Zaphod’s to have a great crowd of music lovers and a great place to just chill and hang out.  Their drink menu even has an eclectic selection of seemingly Hitchhiker inspired cocktails!

Located at 27 York Street in the Byward Market.  Looks like on the day Google Maps street view was shot they were getting stocked up for a busy night!

Ottawa Family Cinema

Looking for a less expensive way to take the whole family out to a movie?  How would you like to benefit local charities while saving money by taking in a movie?  The Ottawa Family Cinema is worth checking out!

The Ottawa Family Cinema is located within the auditorium at Notre Dame high school on Broadview (near Carling Avenue) 710 Broadview Avenue

It is a volunteer run, not for profit, charitable organization that shows family friendly movies and donates profits back to the community.

Movies can be seen for as little as 3.00! with a $25.00 annual family membership.  They don’t just show cartoons but also feature other PG rated movies that an “older” family could enjoy together. (For instance the King’s Speech was shown recently)

Elmdale Public School Book Fest

elmdale bookfest
ELMDALE PUBLIC SCHOOL BOOKFEST 2011

Two adorable girls from our street were making the rounds yesterday getting donations of used books so I thought it was a great chance to promote this local school fundraiser.  I donated a handful of old John Grisham novels that I haven’t read in years as well as a few how-to books on everything from do-it yourself masonry to how to flip houses.  Judging by my donations this event should have a wide array of books to suit everyone’s reading tastes.

Huge selection, popular titles and a great school fundraiser!

BOOKFEST is an annual book sale, a community tradition, and it helps the school celebrate reading.

BOOKFEST helps you find the time to read! All books are carefully sorted by author, subject, and more!

Members of the public are invited into the school to enjoy fresh baked goods, prizes and an amazing selection of good quality, used books.

Doors open on Thursday, February 24th from 3:45 to 8:30 pm and Friday February 25th from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Leftover books are donated to worthy causes in the community. If you know of a group that could benefit from a donation of books. Please contact elmdalebookfest@gmail.com

Collected Works Bookstore

This is a great cozy spot that I just love to go and visit for all my literary needs.

They sell Timothy’s coffee and cookies and have just recently renovated into the old photo studio that was next door (still pictured on Google Maps below)

They often have book readings and signings.  Here is one scheduled for tomorrow (friday) a great excuse to go check out this local treasure!

VAN GOGH’S EAR READING EVENT @ Collected Works Bookstore

1242 Wellington Street West
07:00PM – 08:30PM

Come celebrate the Canadian contributors to international prose and poetry anthology series Van Gogh’s Ear, one of the most popular international books in the field of creative writing! Based in Paris, France and published in conjunction with Allen Ginsberg’s Committee on Poetry in New York City, Van Gogh’s Ear has gained international acclaim since its debut in 1992 for its eclecticism and original creative work by all walks of… life – celebrated poets, authors, artists and other discovered talents.

This reading celebrates the end of the critically-acclaimed anthology series and pays tribute to the Canadian writers who have contributed some of their amazing work, including writers Margaret Atwood, Molly Peacock, Gordon Downie and David Helwig. Reading from their own published works in the series are Gabrielle McIntire, Amanda Earl, and rob mclennan. The reading will be followed by a Q&A. All seven volumes (including the latest and final installment, The Supernatural Edition) will also be available for sale.

Gabrielle McIntire – Queen’s University literature professor and recipient of the W. J. Barnes Arts and Science Undergraduate Society Award for Excellence in Teaching; author of Modernism, Memory, and Desire: T.S. Eliot & Virginia Woolf; and poet whose creative and absorbing poetry has been published in The Literary Review of Canada, The Cortland Review and Kingston Poets’ Gallery.

Amanda Earl – poet, publisher, and wordsmith extraordinaire who has been a major contributor to Ottawa’s literary community for several years. Her sexually explicit erotica, poetry, and even sensual restaurant reviews have appeared online and in literary journals including Quills, Canadian Poetry Magazine, Spire Poetry Poster, and The Dusty Owl Quarterly. She currently pilots local lit projects Bywords Quarterly Journal and AngelHouse Press.

Rob Mclennan – one of Ottawa’s most recognizable poets, radical authors, and all-round literary action figures who has published over two dozen trade books of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction including compact of words, missing persons, and wild horses. He also runs above/ground press and Chaudiere Books and attracts hundreds of readers each week with his literary blog where he regularly posts reviews, essays and interviews.

Ottawa Bagelshop

I love this spot. The overcrowding with overmerchandising drives me crazy at times.  This place sells just about everything! But you cannot beat their Reuben on sesame!  What can I say I have a soft spot for sauerkraut, mustard and smoked meat.

I have fond memories walking down Wellington West and pulling apart hot, fresh, soft bagels and sharing them with the family.

It’s also a great place to enjoy a brunch/lunch and on the weekend.  Some days they will feature live music and the walls of the cafeteria area are adorned with works of art and photography that are often renewed/rotated.

The Ottawa Bagelshop has a fully stocked deli with a large variety of meats, cheeses, pickles etc. it also has a fully stocked buffet (never tried, I go there for the bagels) restaurant, candy store and on and on.  They stock teas, coffees, Art-is-in breads, kitchen gadgets, greeting cards, ice cream, baking supplies and on and on and on.  See what I mean about the overcrowding!  But I can’t complain too much, I love it there!

Another great find at the Ottawa Bagelshop is their selection of bulk Callebaut Chocolate chips my wife uses them in all her gourmet baking and let me tell you its worth it!  You can eat handfuls of this stuff and its like eating a mouthful of gourmet chocolate.

Kids will also love the Jelly Belly display!

The Ottawa Bagelshop is located at 1321 Wellington West.
